Electrical Services in Mansfield

Panel Upgrades for 1980s–1990s Homes

The bulk of Mansfield's older housing went up between 1970 and 2000, often with 100A to 150A panels. We run a load calculation before recommending anything; when a 100A-to-200A replacement is the answer it typically runs $2,200–$4,800, quoted after assessment. Oncor or United, whichever serves the address, disconnects and releases the meter.

Oncor or United Cooperative: Utility Coordination

The two utilities in Mansfield do not have the same rules. United wants the main disconnect on the load side of the meter base, and for solar or other generation it requires a visible, lockable, lever-grip disconnect whose position can be seen without opening a door, and says breakers do not qualify. Oncor reserves the meter socket for its own equipment. We check which one you have before quoting.

Standby Generators

We install, repair and maintain all major standby generator brands, and are the installer of record for UTS ElectricPros, the authorized Cummins dealer. On United service, United asks to be notified before a generator is connected and requires NEC-compliant transfer equipment installed by a licensed electrician; on Oncor, the transfer switch goes on the load side of the meter base. A 20kW unit installed typically runs $13,500–$17,000. Estimate only. Every installation is different; a site visit is required to determine whether your installation will cost less or more than this estimate. A licensed plumber runs the gas line, and you may hire your own.

Mansfield Permits & Inspections

Mansfield's Building Safety Department, at 1200 E. Broad St., requires a permit for the alteration or repair of a building system, electrical included. Single-trade electrical permits are submitted online through the city's MyGov system, and Mansfield asks electrical contractors to register with the city, providing their state license. Registration, the permit and the inspection are the contractor's paperwork, not yours.

EV Charger Installation

Level 2 charger circuits for newer homes in South Pointe, Somerset and across the city, sized against the existing panel with a load calculation rather than assumed. Tesla Wall Connector and J1772.

Whole-Home Surge Protection

A UL 1449-listed surge protective device at the service entrance, typically $350–$850 for a standard installation. Worth doing before storm season rather than after it.

Older Homes Near Historic Downtown

Mansfield had fewer than 4,000 residents until about 1970, so pre-1970 homes are a small share of the city, mostly around the historic downtown. They are the ones most likely to have undersized services, ungrounded receptacles or a Federal Pacific panel, and an inspection is the right first step.

Commercial & Industrial Electrical

Manufacturing, distribution and retail are all part of Mansfield's economy, along US 287 and SH 360; the city broke ground in 2024 on a new manufacturing plant and headquarters near Heritage Parkway and US 287. We handle tenant finish-out, service and capacity upgrades, warehouse lighting and machine wiring, priced from drawings or a site walk with a written scope.

Electrical Work in Mansfield

Mansfield is a different electrical market from its neighbors to the north, and the reason is timing. It had 1,375 residents in 1960 and 3,658 in 1970; then it grew to 8,102 by 1980, 15,607 by 1990 and 28,031 by 2000, and kept climbing. So unlike Arlington or Grand Prairie, most Mansfield homes were built after the aluminum branch-wiring years, and the typical job here is not remediation but capacity: a 1980s or 1990s panel that was adequate when it went in and is now carrying central air, a pool pump, a home office and an EV. The second difference is the utility. Most Mansfield addresses are Oncor territory, but part of the city is served by United Cooperative Services, an electric cooperative with its own rules for disconnects, meter bases and generators. So the first question on a Mansfield service upgrade, generator or solar job is which company's name is on your bill. Mansfield also spans three counties, Tarrant, Johnson and Ellis. Mansfield is a straight run south on SH 360 from our Grand Prairie shop.

Mansfield Homes by Era

What we find behind the panel cover depends a great deal on when the house was built.

Small-Town Mansfield (before 1970)

Mansfield had 1,375 residents in 1960 and 3,658 in 1970, so homes from this era are few and mostly near the historic downtown. Expect undersized services and ungrounded receptacles, and it is worth ruling out a Federal Pacific panel.

First Suburban Wave (1970s–1990s)

The city grew to 8,102 people by 1980 and 15,607 by 1990. Early-1970s homes fall inside the aluminum branch-wiring window and are worth checking, but most of this stock came later, typically with 100A to 150A panels that modern air conditioning, pools and EVs have caught up with.

Boom Years (2000s–today)

Mansfield reached 28,031 people in 2000 and has grown steeply since, in communities like South Pointe and Somerset. Newer homes generally start at 200A; the work is EV chargers, generators, surge protection and solar, where Oncor's and United's interconnection rules differ.

What Panel Work Costs in Mansfield

A 100-amp to 200-amp panel replacement in Mansfield typically runs $2,200–$4,800 all in, including the panel, breakers, permit, inspection and labor. That is a typical range, not your price. Panel prices vary with material costs, the size of the panel and service, and how complex the job is.

Permits & Power in Mansfield

Who issues the permit

Electrical permits for work in Mansfield are issued by the city, and it is the city that inspects the finished work. Requirements, fees and inspection scheduling differ from one DFW city to the next.

Clements Electric pulls the permit and schedules the inspection as part of the job. Texas Electrical Contractor TECL #40628.

Who owns the wires

Most Mansfield addresses are served by Oncor Electric Delivery. Part of the city is served by United Cooperative Services instead — utility territory does not follow city limits.

This matters on a service or panel upgrade: the utility named on your electric bill is the one that has to disconnect and then release the meter before the new service can be energized. Worth checking your bill before scheduling, and we coordinate that call either way.

Solar Panels & a Standby Generator in Mansfield

If your Mansfield home has grid-tied solar, the solar has to connect on the utility side of the generator’s transfer switch, between the meter and the switch, so the generator can never feed the solar inverters. We explain why in adding a standby generator to a home with solar panels. How that connection is made depends on the utility that serves your address, and more than one serves Mansfield: Oncor Electric Delivery or United Cooperative Services. Check the name on your electric bill, because utility territory does not follow city limits.

Oncor Electric Delivery (delivery utility)

  • Disconnect: A visible, lockable, labeled AC disconnect is required between the Oncor meter and every source of distributed generation, within 10 feet of the meter unless special placards are used. Oncor states that molded-case breakers are not an acceptable disconnect.
  • Meter socket: The meter socket is reserved for Oncor metering. No meter collars or other devices may be installed in it or between the meter and the socket.
  • Generator and transfer switch: The generator transfer switch must be installed on the load side of the meter base, never integrated with or in series with the meter. Oncor asks installers to confirm whether the transfer switch is open or closed transition.
  • Solar approval: Solar needs an Oncor interconnection application, and Oncor treats a system as certified when it meets UL 1741 and the applicable parts of IEEE 1547.

United Cooperative Services (electric cooperative)

  • Disconnect: United requires a visible, lockable, lever-grip switch whose on/off position can be seen without opening a door or panel, and states that breakers do not qualify. The location must be acceptable to both the member and United; no distance is published.
  • Meter socket: United requires the main disconnect on the load side of the meter base, and says the meter base should not be used as a raceway between a transfer switch and the breaker panel.
  • Generator and transfer switch: United asks members to notify it before connecting a generator, and requires NEC-compliant transfer equipment installed by a licensed electrician. It also says a member can buy a GenerLink meter-base transfer switch and have United install it, which is unusual among DFW utilities.
  • Solar approval: United charges no solar application fee. The system may be switched on briefly for testing but must stay off until United personnel verify and approve it.
  • Not published by United Cooperative Services: whether a supply-side (line-side) tap is allowed; a UL 1741 inverter requirement (its manual cites IEEE 1547). We confirm these with the utility in writing before the job rather than assume another utility’s rule applies.
